Tsai Ing-wen is Taiwan’s first female presidential candidate. Tsai is competing against President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英ä¹) in Taiwan’s presidential election in January 2012.

Who Is Tsai Ing-wen?:
Tsai is the head of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan. Before beginning her political career, Tsai taught law at two universities in Taipei. Her political career began in the early 1990s. Tsai’s government positions have included working for the Fair Trade Commission, Copyright Commission, Consumer Protection Commission, and the National Security Council.
Tsai political career took off when she was appointed chairperson on the Mainland Affairs Council in 2000 She joined the pan-green DPP in 2004 and was elected to the Legislative Yuan soon after. She was appointed Vice President of the Executive Yuan. Tsai became the chairperson of the DPP in 2008 and has helped gain support for the party in the past few years.

Tsai is a pro-independence presidential candidate who ran for mayor of Taipei in 2010. During
President Ma Ying-jeou’s 2008 presidential election, Ma suggested Tsai as a running mate, but she did not run. Tsai opposed Ma’s support for the
Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), a trade agreement between China and Taiwan that has lowered tariffs on hundreds of Chinese and Taiwanese products and made trade easier. Tsai is running against Ma, of the opposing Kuomintang party, in Taiwan’s presidential election January 14, 2012.
Tsai Ing-wen’s Life:
Tsai went to the College of Law at National Taiwan University. Tsai earned an LL.M from Cornell University Law School and a Ph.D from the London School of Economics.
