For many of us, Super Bowl Sunday presents the biggest challenge to our New Year’s resolution to lose weight. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest food “holidays” in North America, second only to Thanksgiving. But you can serve lighter fare along with the deep-fried munchies, calorie laden dips, and beer. Here are several healthy Chinese and Asian-inspired recipes to enjoy while watching the game.

1. Baked Crab Rangoon

Baked Crab Rangoon still has the classic pairing of crab meat and cream cheese without any deep-frying - the crab/cream cheese mixture is heated to blend the flavors, then served as a dip with baked wonton "chips."

2. Low-Fat Chicken Wonton

This easy Chicken Wonton recipe follows a reader’s suggestion to reduce the fat and calories by baking instead of deep-frying the filled wontons. I’ve also used reduced fat peanut butter and a sugar substitute. Each wonton has about 55 to 60 calories.

3. Restaurant-style Salad Rolls

These delicious rolls, filled with crisp vegetables, are perfect for anyone who doesn't want to blow their diet on Chinese New Year or the Super Bowl. The recipe includes a simple hoisin dipping sauce.

4. Lettuce Wraps

Packets of lettuce filled with chicken and crispy vegetables stir-fried in a simple oyster-flavored sauce, lettuce wraps make a healthy alternative to standard Super Bowl fare. It's gluten free if you use gluten free soy sauce and oyster sauce, and make sure your other condiments are gluten-free.

5. Szechuan Guacamole

The beauty of this recipe is that it allows me to combine two of my favorite cuisines - Mexican and Chinese. Traditional Mexican guacamole is made with avocado, an exotic fruit loaded with vitamins, nutrients, and heart healthy monounsaturated fats. This recipe embellishes the classic dip with Chinese five-spice powder and hot bean sauce. For a healthy alternative to taco chips â€" the traditional Guacamole accompaniment â€" serve the dip with wonton wrappers that have been cut into triangles and baked.

6. Pearl Balls

These shiny glutinous rice balls are filled with pork and seasonings and steamed. Pearl Balls are a popular New Year’s appetizer in Eastern China, as the round balls symbolize reunion and togetherness. Each pearl ball has about 60 to 65 calories, and is suitable for gluten-free diets if you use gluten-free soy sauce and other condiments.

7. Chinese No-Meat Balls - Vegetarian "Meatballs"

Beef flavored soy crumbles make a convenient substitute for ground beef in this party appetizer. See recipe directions for a nutritional breakdown.

8. Vegetarian Potstickers

This recipe for potstickers filled with mashed tofu and vegetables has been reader-rated at 5 out of 5 stars. To lower the calories and fat, use a non-stick skillet to cook the potstickers and lower the amount of oil to 1/2 tablespoon (1 1/2 teaspoons).

9. Stir-fried Lettuce

This side dish is popular during the Chinese New Year season, as lettuce is considered to be a "lucky" food. Feel free to use Romaine instead of Iceberg lettuce. This recipe has been reader-rated at 5 out of 5 stars.

10. Chinese Stuffed Green Peppers

Here is something different for a healthy appetizer to serve guests. Green bell peppers are cut into small pieces, topped with a marinated shrimp filling and then steamed or pan-fried. (Steaming reduces fat and calories).
